Obituary for Clellan "Buzz" Lloyd Bechtold

Clellan “Buzz” Lloyd Bechtold, 86 of Vermillion, SD passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 30 at the Vermillion Sanford Care Center.

Buzz was born in 1932 in Murdo, South Dakota to Julius and Grace Bechtold. He joined an older sister Devota (Hutchinson) and brother Dwight Bechtold. Buzz attended grade school and high school in Mellette County graduating from White River High School in 1951. During his high school career Buzz excelled in basketball, football, track and rodeo holding a state record in hurdles for many years and State Championship in Team Roping and several runner-up awards for calf roping.

On February 14, 1953 Buzz married his best friend, Margie Pearsall, sharing 65 years of marriage. Together they raised three children Crystal, Monty and Cindy.

The family moved from White River to Mission in the early 60’s and built and operated the Maverick Motel for many years. Buzz was never afraid of work and throughout his career he held jobs in various industries such as engineering firm employee, oil field maintenance, licensed brand inspector, cattle feed distributor, cattle ranching, lineman/office manager and State and National board of director for the Rural Electric Association, Deputy Sheriff of Todd County, Mayor of Mission, and owner of a milk trucking company supporting the cheese factory in Mission. While living in Mission Buzz hung up his spurs and became interested in golf where he was instrumental in the building of the Mission Golf Course. He and Margie enjoyed the sport immensely and became very successful at the game. Over the years Buzz also developed and sold homes, townhomes, and commercial buildings as they lived in various cities within South Dakota (Mission, Winner, Hartford, and Sioux Falls).

Buzz will always be remembered for his love of music and entertaining others. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, and a Shriner.

In 1997 Buzz and Marge became “snow birds” in Sun City, Arizona. In 2014 they moved to Vermillion to be closer to family and friends.

He was a good son, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He loved his family very much and they love will miss him deeply.

He is survived by the love of his life and wife Margie (Pearsall) Bechtold, Vermillion, SD; his three children, Crystal (Jim) McGuire of Vermillion, SD, Monty (Peggy) Bechtold of Pierre, SD and Cindy Burton of Katy, TX; 8 grandchildren, Jennifer (Terry) Hrdlicka, Kevin (Janice) McGuire, Brian (Tina) McGuire, Pamela (Dave) Moening, Kelley (Stu) Larson, Cori (Brandon) Haag, Bailey Bechtold (Mic Johnson) and Jessica (Ben) Cuddy; 17 great-grandchildren; his sister, Devota Hutchinson; 2 sisters-in-law; nephews, nieces, and close friends.

Buzz was preceded in death by his parents, Julius and Grace Bechtold, his brother Dwight Bechtold, and a loving granddaughter, Brianne Lea Bechtold.
